During the night, prisoners accumulate in cells without bathrooms and many times without running water. This forces them to throw their excrement through the bars.
In the largest prison in the country, the central penitentiary "La Esperanza" popularly known as "Mariona," the overcrowding has reached 600%. 5,000 prisoners share a space for 800.
