Participatory photography in prisons

RUIDO Photo has been carrying out participatory photography projects in Catalonia prisons since 2005, in a pioneering initiative in Spain. With the available workshops, inmates create their own photographic and audiovisual projects which are executed under the supervision of a photographer.

In the last three years, the project has focused on the Youth Prison of Catalonia, producing hundreds of photographs ranging from self-portraits to landscapes of the prison, as well as a short and long documentary.

In the Juvenile prison of Catalonia, there are around 300 to 400 prisoners between the ages of 18 and 23.

The population of immigrants in the prisons is high. In some prisons, 85 percent of the inmates are from a foreign country.
